#UNTPhysicsTitle: Moiré Quantum Matter Beyond Electrons
Abstract:
Moiré superlattices formed by stacking and slightly twisting atomically thin materials have emerged as a powerful platform for engineering quantum states of matter. Their exceptional tunability can reshape energy bands, enhance interactions, and produce a wide range of correlated and topological phases. While much of this progress has focused on electrons, moiré systems also offer new opportunities for controlling bosonic excitations and their collective behavior.
In this talk, I will discuss two examples involving excitons—bound electron–hole pairs—and magnons—the collective excitations of a magnet. I will show how moiré engineering can produce nearly flat topological exciton bands, providing a route toward strongly interacting bosonic phases, and how twisted semiconductor bilayers can host topological magnons whose properties can be tuned by an external electric field. Together, these results highlight moiré materials as a versatile platform for exploring new forms of quantum matter beyond electronic phases.
