Evolving ABA through Practices of Humility, Compassion and Reflection

Presenter: Dr. Nasiah Cirincione-Ulezi

Abstract:

Empirically based literature suggests that the practices of compassion, humility, and reflection by practitioners in the field of behavior analysis may lead to more positive outcomes for stakeholders. Humility in the field of behavior analysis is not new.  In fact, it has been written about in behavior analytic journals as far back as 1991. In his article, Humble Behaviorism, Neuringer hypothesized if behaviorists were more humble, their effectiveness as scientists would increase (Neuringer, 1991). Additionally, more contemporary work around the conceptual framework of cultural humility, moves beyond the individual accountability addressed with humble behaviorism to address power differentials and institutional accountability, at an organizational level (Fisher-Borne et al, 2015). Compassion is a foundational element of ABA. According to Reinecke (2022) the science of behavior analysis is based in a framework that is well-aligned with compassionate interactions with others, evidenced by the use of a functional assessment approach, recognition of individual reinforcers and the process of assent and consent. This continuing education event will serve to explore and explain how practices of humility, compassion and reflection can serve to promote positive outcomes for stakeholders, in the field of behavior analysis.
