Dr. Jungkwun ‘JK’ Kim, Associate Progessor of Electrical Engineering Department at University of North Texas will give a seminar titled "Advanced 3D microlithography and its Bio/RF applications" to the interested faculty and students at Discovery Park.

 

Abstract

For decades, UV lithography has been the backbone of innovation in various technical fields, such as semiconductors, microelectronics, bio/optical sensors, and RF/microwave devices. Historically, UV lithography relied on mercury-based light sources, but with the advancement of UV-LED technology, new opportunities have emerged, particularly for 3D microfabrication. Despite its potential, UV-LED technology in the realm of microlithography is still in its early stages, and many of its capabilities remain underexplored. This presentation will delve into both the foundational principles and advanced techniques of microlithography, with a special focus on the fabrication of complex 3D microstructures. Highlighted will be a range of unique and intricate microstructures, including millimeter-tall micropillars, horns, and triangular slabs, which pose challenges for conventional methods due to selective UV transparency. Additionally, various 3D microdevices created through this advanced microlithography technique will be showcased, including microinductors designed for low-power DC-DC converters, 3D micromachined antennas for satellite communications, and diverse 3D microneedles for biomedical applications.

 

Bio

Dr. Jungkwun ‘JK’ Kim is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of North Texas. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo in 2011, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Georgia Institute of Technology. From 2013 to 2016, Dr. Kim served as research faculty at the Singh Center for Nanotechnology at the University of Pennsylvania. He then joined Kansas State University as an assistant professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, a role he held from 2016 to 2022.
Dr. Kim has published more than 25 journal articles and over 60 conference proceedings. He holds four patents from the U.S., South Korea, Russia, and China. His recent accolades include the Distinguished Faculty Fellow award from the College of Engineering at the University of North Texas, as well as the Best Paper Award and Best Poster Award from the IEEE DCAS 2024 conference 2024. He also received the 2020 SLAS Technology Reviewer Excellence Award. Dr. Kim serves as an associate editor for journals such as Springer’s Micro and Nano Systems Letters and Frontiers in Micro-/Nano-Systems for Bioengineering and Biotechnology. His active research portfolio includes projects funded by multiple agencies, where he has served as principal investigator (PI) and co-PI on grants from the NSF-CCSS, NSF-CPS, Navy SBIR, DoD SBIR, KEIT, and KIAT.
