Dr. David Brice, Senior Engineer in the Research and Development department at ATI Specialty Materials will give a seminar titled "Relentless Innovation through Materials Development-The ATI Titan Alloys" to the interested faculty and students at Discovery Park.

 

Abstract

Technological development is fundamentally enabled by improvements to the materials available at the time of design. ATI Materials is diligently working on developing new materials to better satisfy the needs for new designs. Recently ATI has brought to market a new line of Titanium alloys, ATI-Titan alloys. This work will showcase current alloy development work being done at ATI with a focus on two new Ti alloys: ATI Titan 171TM and ATI Titan 23TM.

The newly developed ATI Titan 171TM alloy is designed for use in elevated temperatures with an emphasis in elevated temperature strength and creep behavior. This presentation will show heat treatment trial on ATI-Titan 171 TM and the changing microstructures effect on mechanical properties. Along with showcasing the printability of Titan 171 TM.

ATI’s novel Titan 23TM is a newly developed high strength β-Ti alloy that enables printing of large format parts with negligible distortion relative to Ti-6Al-4V. Titan 23 TM demonstrates an improved combination of properties that enable wider applications of additively manufactured titanium parts. This work provides a direct comparison of ATI Titan 23 TM vs ATI 6-4 TM materials produced via laser powder bed fusion and the resulting microstructures, mechanical properties, and residual stresses developed during printing.

 

Biography

Dr. David A. Brice  is a Senior Engineer in the Research and Development department at ATI Specialty Materials in Monroe, NC. David got his Bachelor’s(2013) and Masters of Science(2015) in Materials Science and Engineering at The University of North Texas. While at UNT, his research focused on high temperature oxidation of titanium alloys, additive manufacturing of binary Ti-X gradients, characterization and quantification of microstructural features in titanium alloys. David got his Doctorate from The School of Materials Engineering at Purdue University. While at Purdue, David worked on development of surface severe plastic deformation processing to develop nano-crystalline layers on titanium alloys for biomedical applications. Currently, David works at ATI Specialty Materials in Monroe NC a Senior Engineer in the R&D department, where he works on: alloy development, process development, program management, cross-BU NDE technology development and materials characterization/standardization.
