Dr. Yiliang (Leon) Liao, Associate Professor from Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Iowa State University will give a seminar titled "Laser-Assisted Advanced Manufacturing: from Fundamental Mechanisms to Engineering Applications" to the interested faculty and students at Discovery Park.

 

Abstract

Lasers can be used to deliver energy with extremely wide spectral, spatial, and temporal ranges.  These laser properties have provided many opportunities for advanced manufacturing and material engineering.  In this presentation, the speaker will give an overview of his research activities in laser-assisted advanced manufacturing and materials processing.  Laser-induced shockwave with a high peak pressure can be utilized for surface engineering of structural components towards enhanced materials durability. Laser-induced localized heating can be used for additive manufacturing (3D printing) of metallic materials. Furthermore, laser-matter interactions can be spatially, spectrally, and temporally controlled and optimized for micro-/nano-manufacturing, such as photon-enabled fabrication and processing of nanomaterials. This talk will cover the following research areas: 1) laser shock processing of structural metals; 2) micro/nanostructure integrated metal 3D printing; 3) laser-assisted nanomanufacturing of nanomaterials towards applications in energy storage, biomedical, and soft robotics.

 

Biography

Dr. Yiliang (Leon) Liao is currently an associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State University. Dr. Liao’s research is mainly focused on advanced manufacturing process innovation and advanced materials processing towards applications in biomedical, energy storage, structural engineering, and soft robotics.  Dr. Liao’s research efforts have been supported by multiple funding agencies including NSF, NASA, DOE, ORNL, REMADE, IEC, and industry partners.  He has published 80+ journal publications.
