Instructor presence, or making a human connection with students, takes intentional design in online classes. When achieved, it can positively impact success rate, motivation, and perception of learning (Amerstorfer & Freiin von Münster-Kistner; Bardorfer & Dolenc, 2022; Cartee, 2021; Caskurlu et al., 2020; Glazier & Skurat Harris, 2020; Miller & Mills, 2019). In a study of 35 classes, "high rapport" practices increased the class pass rate by 25%, particularly among students with low GPAs (Glazier & Skurat Harris, 2020).
