On view will be a continuous screening of his video Terrestrial with related floor-based sculptures. The artwork is inspired by the nature of space and unmanned vehicles designed to move across the surface of planets. In Terrestrial, the term "rover" is a point of departure for the artist who is also interested in the behavior of dogs and their sensitivity to the earth's magnetic field. Shot from the viewpoint of a canine and rendering ordinary situations with wonder, this video occurs in a residential apartment and surveys a floor littered with banal objects. Oliver uses everyday items like tea kettles, light bulbs, and umbrellas to evoke poetic associations between physical materials and natural phenomena.
Demetrius Oliver is an interdisciplinary artist based in New York City. He received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. He is an alumna of several residencies, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Core Program, the International Studio and Curatorial Program, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Oliver's work has been included in exhibitions across the U.S., including P.S. 1/MoMA (New York, NY), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA), and the Blanton Museum of Art (Austin, TX). He has served on the Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Cooper Union, and Parsons faculty.
The 2025 exhibition, curated by DBFF Fine Arts Director Lauren Kelley, will be on view through Saturday, February 15. This event is FREE and open to the public.
