Dr. Duck Bong Kim, Associate Professor from Department of Manufacturing & Engineering Technology at Tennessee Technological University will give a seminar titled "Research/Education/Service in Metaverse-based Smart Manufacturing and Data Analytics" to the interested faculty and students at Discovery Park.
Abstract
Metaverse is a new, enabling technology to realize smart manufacturing. Metaverse technologies include virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and the emergence of extended reality (XR). Metaverse is characterized by integrating the physical world, the digital world, and the interactions and collaborations among the humans in both worlds. It is envisioned that Metaverse will significantly change the human life patterns. Also, Metaverse has a great potential to positively change the manufacturing landscape by taking advantages of (1) immer-sive experience, (2) freedom in physical distance, and (3) interconnection. Although metaverse has been successfully conceptualized and implemented in various sectors, its applications in smart manufacturing are still unexplored. In this talk, Dr. Kim aims to provide not only comprehensive but also well-balanced perspectives on past, present, future re-search and development of Metaverse-based Smart Manufacturing (M-SM). For exploring and developing the M-SM concept and its system, Dr. Kim’s current research areas include (1) Process improvement of robot-based wire + arc ad-ditive manufacturing using machine learning, (2) Multi-scale experimental and computational study for extreme envi-ronment applications, (3) Physics-informed, machine learning-based high throughput experimental method, (4) Digital twin-driven qualification methodology for an additive manufacturing process/part, (5) Metaverse-based smart manu-facturing demonstration in WAAM, and (6) Open platform communication unified architecture (OPCUA)-based cyber-physical system for advanced manufacturing processes.
Biography
Dr. Duck Bong Kim is an associate professor at the department of Manufacturing & Engineering Technolo-gy and joint faculty at Mechanical Engineering as well as Electrical and Computer Engineering at Tennessee Technologi-cal University. He had been working as a research associate at the National Institute of Stand-ards & Technology (NIST), Maryland, USA (from Oct., 2011 to Jul., 2016). Dr. Kim was involved in two projects at the NIST: “Systems Integration for Additive Manufacturing” & “Modeling Methodology for Smart Manufacturing Systems”. With a PhD and MS in School of Information and Mechatronics from Gwangju Institute of Science & Technology (GIST), Korea, Dr. Kim is a cross-disciplinary research scientist with knowledge & experience in advanced design & manu-facturing engineering: smart manufacturing, additive manufacturing (3D Printing), wire+arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), sustainable manufacturing, data analytics, & machine vision. Currently, he is focusing on wire + arc additive manufacturing for refractory alloys (e.g., Titani-um-Zirconium-Molybdenum) fabrication by supporting from an NSF CAREER program.
